The Positive Thinking Recipe

The recipe of positive thinking is big among some religious circles. The popular belief is that your thinking will determine the outcome of whatever situation you are in. This recipe is mainly applied when praying for deliverance from some challenge or for success in some venture. Somehow, "positive thinking" will result in the power of God (or some other latent personal power) going into operation which will miraculously bring about the desired result.

The closest thing to positive thinking mentioned in the Bible are a few specific records where people are encouraged not to fear or fret. Search for the modern positive thinking recopies in the Bible and they will not be found – they are just not in there! The operation of positive thinking does not invoke spiritual power. I repeat, simply "thinking positive" does not result in spiritual power going into operation – for any purpose whatsoever. Conversely, "thinking negatively" does not impede the operation of spiritual power.

I have sat in numerous teachings about this recipe and have read books on the same subject. The most recent book dealt with controlling the thought process so as to bring an abundant monetary increase to yourself. So many assumptions in these teachings and books are left unsaid. The book I mentioned assumes that the reader is well educated, with good problem solving and business skills. These assumptions are not stated. The reader has to discern this from the examples given. At best, these self-help books encourage the reader to be optimistic instead of pessimistic. At worst, the books and teachings are truly deceptive, promising power to be unleashed when you think according to the recipe.

For centuries, the religious organizations and institutions have provided terrible examples for Christian behavior in all aspects of life. Their teachings and examples are designed to hinder and shut down the godly spiritual functioning and impact of the individual believers. For the most part, their prayers and teachings will not result in the manifestation of power in anyones life. There is no godly deliverance available in religion. (See the chapter "The Promises of God" in "Godly Abundance and Prosperity")

I have seen this "positive thinking" recipe actually endanger the well being of some who are experiencing  challenges to their health. One person had temporary difficulty with walking and their balance. Because they were convinced of the need to "stay positive", they refused to use any device that would assist their walking and stabilize their balance. Others refuse prescribed medical treatment or medication. This was a contributing factor in the death of a friend. What a foolish waste!

Live is not designed for us to depend upon divine intervention. Although the power of God does exist in each believer, it does not exist for the individual to invoke for their own benefit and enrichment. Instead, much of the teaching in the Bible is geared towards encouragement and the development endurance in challenging situations! (See the chapters on "Job" in "Godly Abundance and Prosperity")

Generally, three things have helped me to appropriately overcome the challenges of life:
  • Take responsibility for myself – obtain a marketable skill and improve my problem solving skills (the author Larry Winget has some good, hard-hitting books that will help)
  • Associate with spiritually like-minded people whose functioning compliments my own functioning
  • Disassociate myself from religion and its influence

Secular Spirituality

The purpose of this posting is NOT to be critical of anyone; it is to point out the common terms and behaviors encountered everyday which refer to some form of spirituality.

To begin, the term "faith" should be defined. One definition I found states that faith is "a firm belief in something for which there is no proof". You can cloak a "firm belief" in religion, or not, but this definition fits the manner in which this word is popularly used today.

In general, our society which is supposed to be rational and scientific, continues to cling to superstitions, irrational and unprovable beliefs. Start listening to the media, students and educators for references to superstitious terms. Some of these terms are "mother nature", "luck", "fate", etc. Those who cling to these concepts span the entire spectrum of society.

Each one of these terms refer to some unseen, undetectable entity, power or force which can affect people and events. Some people even speak and behave as if these entities can be entreated so as to intervene on behalf of the supplicant. The continued acceptance, use of, and belief in these concepts form an almost universal "faith".

Another aspect of secular spirituality is the drive to go beyond what is physically possible. Note that I did not say "…what is theoretically possible…" This behavior manifests itself most notably in drug abuse by athletes. The point at which faith begins and reason ends varies.

There is the aspect of faith (as defined above) in science. Scientific faith manifests itself when discussing the existence of extra-terrestrial life. The more popular arguments deal the the "probability" or "chances" that the excessive number of worlds which exist will or will not have life. There is no proof for such a belief at this time so faith must be used to accept the existence of such life.

The use (application) of mathematical models and statistics is an area where the boundary between reason and faith is not well defined.

What about unprovable Axioms (I consider that these as a subset of all Axioms)? The acceptance and application of such axioms would seem to require faith as well.

Today, more than any other time during my life, the popular view of Government has taken on god-like attributes. Listen to how children, educators, media and politicians speak of government. Listen to how the unknown, unseen and powerful "policy makers" are referred to by the scientific types. It is difficult to really know what image is held in any individual mind. It does seems that "government" is becoming a sentient deity of some kind in the minds of some.

Could it be that many of those who communicate their rejection of "faith" and anything unprovable are really communicating a rejection of religion? Such a rejection is understandable and very reasonable.

Note that the definition for "faith" given above is cultural and religious, not Biblical.

Godly Abundance and Prosperity

The end of 2013 is rapidly approaching. With the start of the new year, many have a desire for a transformed life and circumstances. In order to effect such a transformation, there exists a plethora of religious organizations which teach a variety of "prosperity" doctrines, practices and recipes for the needy and greedy. This religious "industry" uses the Bible to legitimize their doctrines, practices, and the appeals to transfer cash from your pockets to their bank accounts.

I am one who has journeyed through this industry and have seen first-hand the lack of results, the lack of transformed lives. Year after year, people and families remain impoverished without obtaining the promised "abundance and prosperity". So often God is blamed for the lack, or the individual Christian is left wondering what they did wrong.

This raises some questions:
What does the Bible really teach about prosperity?
How does the Bible define prosperity?
Those being devoured by poverty question what they have done wrong, why bad things are still happening to them
If these beliefs and expectations are accurate then why are so many failing to obtain prosperity for themselves and their families?
If these beliefs and expectations are not accurate, why are they being promoted? Why are so many being deceived?

Additionally, the doctrines and prescriptions of this religious industry ignore other spiritual factors which influence life and the challenges we all face

After spending several years researching these issues, I composed a series of teachings which answered these questions. This series formed the basis of the book "Godly Abundance and Prosperity". For those who heard these teachings, it was a life changing experience. Among other things,
They stopped sending their hard earned money to the religious institutions, using it for the needs of their family instead
Expectations were changed since they learned how "prosperity" is defined Biblically
The basis for self condemnation was eradicated
One of the participants reported that "…no one will ever control me again…"

It is the goal of this book to expose religious error by exploring the Biblical and spiritual aspects of prosperity. Thus, Christians can stop being exploited by those who would decieve them.

The Truth About Religion, Sin and the Bible

Lately there has been much discussion about homosexuality, sin and the Bible. Much of the controversy and division is due to the fact that the discussion is about religion beliefs vs secular practice, not truth vs secular practice. Thus there is much division among people who are attempting to achieve otherwise common political goals.

Homosexuality is only one type of behavior which is mentioned in the Bible. It is yanked out of a moral and instructional context by the religious institutions. In order to address this subject specifically, one must have a grasp of the general concept of "sin" and what the Bible teaches about this concept. What is revealed biblically is not what is taught by religion.

Although the non-religious reader may find this posting difficult to read, I encourage patience. It is important to know the information that is contained in this posting to be able to make some sense about these subjects.

I will refer to a small set of scriptures to be brief. Although the critic may question whether these verses have been yanked out of context, I have worked hard to make sure that this has not happened.

Simply put, sin is anything, real or subjectively perceived, which separates one from God, the creator of heaven and earth, the heavenly father of Jesus Christ.

In John 8:31-36 Jesus declares that "…the truth will set you free…" and explains that it is sin that the truth will set you free from. He goes on to equate himself with "the truth". So, Jesus Christ is one who is empowered to set all humans free from sin; he is "the truth".

So, what are we to do in response to the savior who sets us free from sin? This is communicated in Romans 6. In verses 10 – 12 it says:

For the death he died he died to sin, once for all, but the life he lives he lives to God. So you also must consider yourselves dead to sin and alive to God in Christ Jesus. Let not sin therefore reign in your mortal body, to make you obey its passions.

When this was written, Jesus Christ had fulfilled the "law of Moses". By fulfilling this law, it is no longer in effect; in essence, it has been abolished along with all the infrastructure that enforced this law. Note that the scripture does not say to reform the behavior of the flesh, but it says not to let "sin" rule in your body, don't obey the out of bounds desires. Note that this applies to all believers in all categories. How this is accomplished is explained shortly.

The book of Galatians deals with groups of believers who are being tempted to submit to religious law again; a body of law which has been fulfilled and thus, abolished. To these people Paul declares in Galatians 5 that those who submit to the law are obligated to do the entire law. Now, if one who is obligated to do this law leaves one little thing out, violates anything, then they are guilty of the entire law. Paul calls the teachings which seduce the Christian into submitting to the law "…hindering you from obeying the truth."

In Romans 6 and 7, Paul communicates that acceptance of Christ as your savior results in a new spiritual self, a new identity, being created in the individual. This is different from the former self and identity which existed previously. This is the "new self" of the spirit and the "old self" of the flesh. Not discerning this new spiritual self has resulted in all kinds of difficulty.

In Romans 7:25 Paul makes an astounding declaration. He states that with his mind (the mind of the new spiritual self) he obeys the law of God. This is not the law of Moses but something different. He then says that with the flesh (the old self referred to in Romans 6) he serves sin! This is followed in the context by Romans 8:1, where he declares that there is no longer any condemnation to those who are in Christ Jesus (accepted him as Lord and savior).

In addition, note that in Galatians 2:20 Paul declares that he lives by the faith of Jesus Christ; he does not live by the scriptures! The scriptures we purport to use today did not even exist in his day!

So, finally, what are we supposed to do – just continue on with our old behavior? Submit to religious law, doctrines, policies and procedures? No, not at all! Galatians 5:16, 17 holds the answer:
Walk by the spirit and you will not fulfill the desires of the flesh (remember Romans 6?); the spirit has desires which are against the flesh and the flesh has desires which are against the spirit. These desires are not going away.

The bottom line is that we are not to allow the desires of the flesh to dominate or rule our lives. The only way to do this is to walk by spiritual inspiration. Period. Anything done religiously to reform the flesh, our behavior, will fail.

Institutional religion cannot afford to have these truths taught or practiced. In order for them to remain viable and useful to their clients as organizations, they must foster a sense of sin consciousness. They must remain the agent which provides services which purport to clean a person of their sins. The religious organizations define "sin" as any infraction of their doctrines, policies and procedures. Since the real, original law of Moses has been fulfilled and abolished, they have had to formulate their own law which is no law at all. These religious laws are all void of any true spiritual significance.

Note that the religious concepts of heaven and hell as taught for centuries have their origin in Greek and Roman paganism. There is absolutely no scriptural basis for these doctrines. However there are attempts to twist scriptures in order to give validity to these doctrines.

Historically, it has been in the best interest of the corporate religious institutions to promote generation after generation of new members. One way this is accomplished is to influence and control the sexual behaviors of their clients. It is in the best interest of the organization to make sure that all their members are heterosexual, in relationships validated by the organization, producing as many progeny as possible.

Historically, it has been the practice of the corporate religious institutions to influence the secular political organizations in order to promote the interests of the religious institutions. This influence remains today, especially in the realm of marriage. The agents of the religious institutions continue to function as authorized agents of the state to confirm the marriages of their citizens.

If the interests of the corporate religious institutions conflict with truth, morality, or the best interests of their clients, then the interests of the institution win every time, often at the expense of any other interest.

Conclusion: Spiritually, every person is as sinful as every other person – there is no exception. No one is any better or any worse than any other person. No sin is any worse than any other sin.

The remedy to the Christian is to do what is instructed in Romans 6, by walking by the spirit, i.e. living by spiritual inspiration and revelation. This is available to every Christian. Sin consciousness is of no practical use to anyone – in fact it is detrimental to the believers. Early in Romans it is stated that the goodness (or gentleness) of God leads to repentance, not condemnation or sin consciousness.

Paul states at the end of Romans 5 that it is up to God to judge those outside of the believers (the collective body of Christ; he is not referring to the corporate religious organizations). The believers have nothing to do with such judgments.

Finally, the contemporary struggle that is raging today regarding marriage and sexual behavior is in no way Biblical. It has nothing to do with truth. It is a collection of religious organizations attempting to maintain their cultural, social and political influence. These organizations are fighting for survival. Don't blame the Bible or use the Bible to validate the arguments of this religious/political struggle. Don't fall prey to the fear, uncertainty or doubt that is engendered by the religious rhetoric which is prevalent in this struggle.

Scientific Propaganda and Individual Freedom

Scientific theory currently holds the same cultural position in our society as the myth does in ancient societies.

After some consideration, the reader may accept the previous statement as accurate. However, there is something inaccurate there, which must be corrected and clarified. The inaccuracy is in the two words, "…scientific theory…"

Most of what the electorate "knows" of "science" and "scientific theory" is obtained from unscientific sources; it is obtained from "the media" or from "the internet". Over the years the media has transformed into the propaganda arm of the radical political left.  Most publications which purport to be "scientific" obtain major funding from government sources, either directly, or indirectly.

What these institutions publicize as "science" is, in reality, propaganda which is only scientific in appearance. This is done so that any political discourse regarding these subjects can be controlled and directed by the government propaganda machines. In other words, any discourse about scientific matters will mainly be a discourse about the propaganda, not science itself.

Let me ask the reader:
  • How many scientists do you personally know? Of this number, how many are not funded (directly or indirectly) by government?
  • How many actual scientific papers, unfiltered by the media or government sponsored academia, do you read (and understand) each year?
Ponder the answers that any graduate of the government schools might offer.

Thus, those who are capable of discussing real scientific issues are hampered by a lack of actual scientific information. As it is now, most of those who have passed through the government schools are woefully ill-equipped to discuss anything that requires critical thought.

Note that in current public political discourse, anything which appears to be scientific is not. It is a mirage, an illusion, a deception; it is ignorance on display.

So, what is the goal of scientific propaganda, which are the myths of our culture? What is it designed to promote and teach?

If we examine the popular myths of the ecological movement, the following messages can be found:
  • The current activities of our social and business institutions are unsustainable. These activities have a negative, destructive impact upon our planet. Additionally, these activities are inherently unfair as they promote and cause various social inequities among the population.
  • The bottom line is that individualism, individual freedom and individual rights, are unsustainable. In as much as the freedom and rights of the individual exacerbate the ecological damage to the planet, these freedoms and rights must be eliminated.
  • The cure to the ecological "problems" is centralized government which is mandated to protect the planet and itself. All other considerations are rescinded; individualism must be eliminated.
In order to eliminate individual freedom, the electorate must willingly give up its individual rights and freedoms; the individual must give surrender all political power to the government. This goal will be achieved through fear, social pressure, and twisted logic.

Socially, "science" holds the status, respect, and reverence of a religious institution. Almost no one in the political or public sphere desires to be branded as a "scientific heretic". Thus, many who could engage in public discourse on the important political issues of our time are fooled into silence out of respect for the word "science" or "scientific". Once it is realized that there is no science being discussed or debated in the public arena, perhaps this silence will end.

Once it is realized that the "scientific logic" used by the media propaganda machines is twisted, the twisted logic can easily be identified and countered – often with the same words and concepts of the propagandists turned against them.

Once it is realized what is at stake, the real subject at hand can be discussed; this subject is our individual freedoms, rights and responsibilities.

The current cultural "scientific" myth is that individualism, individual freedom, rights and responsibility is an evil which must be eliminated. These freedoms are much too dangerous for the planet. Most discussion centers on the " ecological problems" and not on the "solutions" envisioned by the ecologist and their propagandist. It is these "solutions" which must be brought out and communicated, preferably by the ecological proponents. Have them describe the world and political environment they are promoting.

Update:
Here is a link to an article about how the "scientific media" distorts the scientific process:
Just remember, this is an article from another type of media.
