Those who function in the name of religious institutions have a habit of accusing God (specifically the God and Father of Jesus Christ) as the source of great evil when various calamities occur in our country. The reason given for God invoking these calamities, is the peoples general lack of adherence to some religious standard. Thus we hear those in the pulpits of various denominational and non-denominational religious organizations declare that "God is punishing America".
These accusations are based upon gross misunderstanding and twisting of scripture. The public at large accepts such statements because of their gross ignorance of scripture and lack of a clear understanding of God.
Religion exists as a repudiation and rejection of the accomplishments of Jesus Christ and the grace of God. If the accomplishments of Jesus Christ and the grace of God were truly embraced and understood, the worthless and powerless nature of religion would be exposed; the religious organizations would wither and die. Religion embraces legalism, a legalistic relationship with God. Religious legalism incorporates "blessings from God" for legal religious behavior and "punishment from God" for illegal religious behavior. Legalistic religion causes the practitioner to be self-centered and self-absorbed. This is also known as "self-righteousness".
Examine the behavior of the apostles and believers in the book of Acts. None of them ever worked to establish any kind of religious organization. In fact, in Paul's prophecy of an attack on the believers in Ephesus, there is a description of the "fierce wolves" and some of the elders who participate in the attack. The wolves would not spare the flock. Some of the elders would arise, speaking twisted things to draw away the disciples after them. This is the beginning, the roots of the religious organizations that we see today (Acts 20:29,30).
In Acts 17:24 and 25, Paul boldly declares that God does not live in temples made by human hands. In addition, God is not served by human hands. Those two statements alone expose the ignorant, powerless and worthless practice of religion. These two statements have been ignored and disregarded for centuries!
The only genuine religious law was revealed and instituted as part of a covenant between God and the Hebrew people, also known as the children of Israel or the children of Jacob.
However, by the time of Jeremiah, the covenant between God and the Hebrews had been broken and nullified by the Hebrew people. This is declared and documented by revelation given to the prophet Jeremiah in Jeremiah 31:31, 32.
However, Jesus Christ was sent to fulfill God's end of the covenant. In Matthew 5:17, 18, Jesus himself declares that he came to fulfill the law and the prophets. Nothing would pass away from the law until it was completely fulfilled.
Jesus Christ accomplished the fulfillment of the law. Once fulfilled, the covenant between God and the Hebrew people ceased to exist. Thus, Ephesians 2:14-16 states:
14 For he (Christ) himself is our peace, who has made us (Jew and Gentile) both one and has broken down in his flesh the dividing wall of hostility
15 by abolishing the law of commandments expressed in ordinances, that he might create in himself one new man in place of the two, so making peace,
16 and might reconcile us both to God in one body through the cross, thereby killing the hostility.
The only genuine religious law, the mosaic law of commandments expressed in ordinances has been fulfilled by Jesus Christ!
Now think about that for a moment. If there is no genuine religious law applicable to you, then there is no way to violate that law. Additionally, all the supporting apparatus of the religious law is gone; the courts, lawyers, defense attorneys, enforcement officers, judges; even the penalties are gone!
No, the God and Father of Jesus Christ is not punishing any nation or any people. In particular He is not punishing you. It is His will that all are to be born from above and to come to a knowledge of The Truth.
There are many false prophets in the world today, claiming to speak for God, through Jesus Christ. They speak to fill people with fear and shame, to draw followers after themselves and their organizations. Don't waste your time or effort listening to them.
God is Always Good!
